Bangor, ME - The Husson University Eagles returned to their
winning ways with a 98-68 victory over Green Mountain
College. The team participated in "Think Pink," donning
pink warm-up jerseys and playing before a crowd clad in pink to
help raise breast cancer awareness. With the win, Husson
improves to 14-0 overall and 8-5 in the North Atlantic Conference
(NAC). Green Mountain falls to 7-16 overall and 4-9 in the
conference.
Before the start of the game, the Husson Eagles set the tone by
honoring last year's 2008-2009 NAC champions with the presentation
of their championship rings. Husson maintained the momentum
generated by their ring ceremony, getting off to an early lead.
Husson's Josh Jones (So., Jefferson, ME) got the Eagles on the
board with an three point shot. Green Mountain's Eddie
Asieduo (Sr., Bronx, NY) hit an inside layup to tie the game at 13
and Gerard Johnson (Fr., Binghamton, NY) followed up with a deuce
to give Green Mountain a 13-15 lead over Husson. Husson's
Matt MacKenzie (Sr., Warren, ME) drove to the basket to tie the
game at 15 and followed with an inside layup to reclaim the Eagle
lead at 17-15. The Husson Eagles began to pull away but Green
Mountain's Rui Carmo (Sr., Fort Meyers, FL) tied the game at
22. Marc Zaharchuk (Fy., Richmond, ME) answered with an
immediate shot to reclaim the Husson lead at 24-22. Husson and
Green Mountain traded the lead multiple times throughout the first
half but Husson pulled away in the final minutes of the half to
secure a 45-35 point lead.
MacKenzie contributed 15 points in the first half, followed by
Brock Bradford (Sr., Kenduskeag, ME) with 11. For Green
Mountain, Carmo netted 12 points followed by Trent Morgan (Jr.,
Streetsboro, OH) with 8.
Husson's MacKenzie opened the second half with a layup bringing
the score to 47-35. Husson steadily pulled away from Green
Mountain in the second half, ending the game with a 98-68 victory.
Carmo led Green Mountain with an impressive 32 points and 13
rebounds, followed by Morgan with 16 points. For the Eagles,
Bradford tallied 20 points followed by MacKenzie with 19
points. Jones netted 10 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
This evening, the Husson University men's basketball team held
their second annual "Think Pink" game sponsored by the Women's
Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). During the month
of February, Pink Zone events are taking place across the country
to raise breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in
communities and beyond. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3
million, reached over 912,000 fans, and unified more than 1,600
participating teams and organizations. The WBCA's charity of
choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, in partnership with
The V Foundation and funds raised at this evening's games will be
donated accordingly.
The Eagles round out their regular season tomorrow at home
against Castleton. Game time is set for 4:00. Green
Mountain travels to Maine Maritime and will play at 4:00
