CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Sophomore Miguel Diaz Alvarez recorded two goals and an assist as the Husson University men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season, defeating Lesley University 5-0 in its North Atlantic Conference opener Saturday at Dilboy Stadium.
Husson (1-3-1, 1-0 NAC) applied pressure early, with Diaz Alvarez forcing Lesley goalkeeper Ethan Ford into a save in the fourth minute before converting a penalty kick at 7:08 to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles continued to generate opportunities, as Diaz Alvarez, sophomore Lucas Alabiso and freshman Santiago Jimenez each put attempts on target over the next nine minutes. Lesley (1-4-1, 0-1 NAC) threatened in the 16th minute when Lukas Halper struck the post, but Husson maintained its advantage.
Husson doubled its lead in the 34th minute when a cross deflected into the net for a Lesley own goal. Diaz Alvarez added his second goal just 3:15 later, heading home a long cross from freshman Carlos Davila to put the Eagles ahead 3-0.
Husson carried that lead into halftime after outshooting the Lynx 9-2 and earning all three corner kicks of the opening half.
The Eagles extended their advantage in the 55th minute when sophomore Cesar Soucre scored off an assist from Diaz Alvarez. Just 1:21 later, Jimenez added an unassisted goal to make it 5-0.
Husson continued to control play over the remainder of the contest. Sophomore Liam Mason stopped an attempt from Lesley in the 72nd minute for his lone save of the match, helping preserve the shutout.
Freshman Ludovico Barosi tested the Lynx in the 75th minute before sophomore Janvier Mbilizi struck the post in the 80th minute. Freshman Vittorio Gaiani and Barosi added shots on target in the closing minutes as the Eagles finished with a 20-3 advantage in shots.
Diaz Alvarez led Husson with six shots, all on goal, while Soucre and Barosi each recorded three attempts. Jimenez put both of his shots on target, and Davila joined Diaz Alvarez with an assist.
Mason played all 90 minutes in goal to record the shutout as the Eagles limited Lesley to one shot on target.
The Eagles will return home for their next contest, hosting the University of New England at 6 p.m. at John P. Boucher Field.
