Pangburn scores twice as women’s soccer draws Southern Maine

BANGOR, Maine — Sophomore Jaquie Pangburn scored twice in a 48-second span to help the Husson University women's soccer team earn a 2-2 draw against the University of Southern Maine in non-conference action Wednesday at John P. Boucher Field.

Husson (2-2-1) received two early saves from sophomore Gabriella Smith, who stopped attempts from Marie Benoit and Mia Wetzel in the opening nine minutes to keep the Huskies (3-2-1) off the scoreboard.

The Eagles began generating opportunities midway through the half, as Pangburn sent an attempt wide in the 24th minute before senior Olivia Charles forced Southern Maine goalkeeper Kaylee Vasiloff into a save less than a minute later. Charles added two more attempts over the next two minutes as Husson continued to push for the opening goal.

Pangburn broke the scoreless tie in the 34th minute with an unassisted goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. Just 48 seconds later, she found the back of the net again off an assist from junior Ella Hosford, who had entered immediately following the first goal.

Husson carried its 2-0 lead into halftime after holding a 6-4 advantage in shots and limiting Southern Maine to two attempts on target.

The Huskies cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute when Sierra Jepson scored off an assist from Natalie Flageolle.

Smith helped protect the Eagles' lead with key saves before Lexi Morin scored for Southern Maine off an assist from Wetzel in the 78th minute to tie the contest at 2-2.

The Eagles continued to pursue the go-ahead goal down the stretch. Freshman Nola Bryant sent a shot wide in the 87th minute before Pangburn put an attempt on target in the 88th minute that Vasiloff stopped.

Smith answered with a save on Wetzel at 88:42 to keep the score even. Bryant then forced Vasiloff into one final stop with nine seconds remaining as the teams finished deadlocked.

Pangburn led Husson with five shots, including three on goal, while Charles added three attempts and Bryant finished with two. Smith made seven saves over the 90 minutes, including five in the second half.

Husson will open North Atlantic Conference play Saturday when it travels to Lesley University for an 8:30 p.m. matchup.
