WATERVILLE, Maine — The Husson University women's soccer battled No. 24 Colby College through a scoreless opening half before the Mules scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-0 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon at Colby College.
Husson (2-2) generated several opportunities during the opening 45 minutes, beginning with a shot from sophomore Jaquie Pangburn in the eighth minute. Junior Paige Dunn followed with an attempt less than a minute later before putting another shot on target in the 21st minute that was stopped by Colby goalkeeper Talia Thompson.
The Eagles continued to threaten later in the half, as senior Olivia Charles forced Thompson into a save in the 36th minute before senior Emma Nicholson put an attempt on frame in the 40th minute. Husson finished the first half with five shots, including three on goal, while the Eagles' defense kept the Mules off the scoreboard despite nine Colby attempts.
Colby (3-1) increased its offensive pressure after halftime and broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute. Abigail Jarvi found the back of the net off an assist from Liz Brady to give the Mules a 1-0 advantage.
The Mules doubled their lead in the 71st minute when Avery Barton scored off an assist from Alagna Proskurowski, making it 2-0.
Sophomore Gabriella Smith made seven saves over the opening 71:17 in goal for Husson before junior Aubrey Fadden took over for the final 18:43. Fadden stopped both shots she faced as the Eagles' goalkeeping duo combined for nine saves.
Colby finished the afternoon with a 29-5 advantage in shots, while putting 11 attempts on goal compared to three for Husson. The Mules also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Dunn led the Eagles with two shots, including one on goal, while Charles and Nicholson each recorded a shot on target and Pangburn added one attempt.
Husson will look to bounce back in its next contest, as it hosts the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
