WATERVILLE, Maine – The North Atlantic Conference released its weekly award winners for baseball on Monday and Husson University juniors Matt Holmes and Ryan Garner secured honors.
Holmes earned his second player of the week award after he put together a dominant week of conference action for the Eagles, who went 5-1 over the week, picking up a doubleheader split with SUNY Cobleskill on Monday, before sweeping a four-game weekend series with Lesley University. Holmes went 10-17 at the plate, recording one double, one triple and one home run during the week, while also driving in nine runs, including a two-run single on Friday night in game two against Lesley to give Husson the eventual game-winning runs, in addition to a walk-off hit by pitch in game one on Saturday. Also at the plate, Holmes drew six walks and one stolen base and struck out just once during the week to help boost his batting average from .300 to .404.
Garner was named pitcher of the week following a great week on the mound for Husson in his three appearances, recording one win and two saves for the Eagles in a 5-1 week overall for the team. Against SUNY Cobleskill on Monday, Garner hurled two innings and surrendered just one hit, while punching out one batter to earn the first save of his career. In game two against Lesley University on Friday, Garner closed out the seventh inning in one-two-three fashion with two of those outs being strikeouts to help the Eagles sweep Friday's double-dip. Garner concluded the week on Saturday with a vital 2.2 innings pitched in the series finale against Lesly, by allowing just two walks during the outing and recording three strikeouts, as the Eagles walked-off Lesley for a second time on the day. For the week, Garner totaled 5.2 innings pitched, while allowing just one hit and two walks, adding six strikeouts.
Additionally for the Eagles, freshman Liam Kelley was selected to the weekly honor roll for his efforts.
