BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University baseball team put together a dominant offensive showing in both ends of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader, sweeping the University of Maine at Farmington by scores of 10-4 and 9-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.
Game 1: Husson 10, UMaine-Farmington 4
Husson (12-16, 10-5 NAC) wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a walk to senior Cam Rendell and a double from junior Matt Holmes brought home the game's first run, junior Henry Lausier followed with a two-run single to give the Eagles an early 3-0 advantage.
The Eagles added another run in the second inning when Rendell delivered an RBI single, extending the lead to 4-0. UMaine-Farmington (8-20, 6-9 NAC) responded with three runs in the fourth, capitalizing on a Husson error to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Eagles answered immediately in the bottom half. Holmes ripped a triple to left field, scoring Rendell and pushing the lead back to two.
After the Beavers added a run in the fifth to make it 5-4, Husson broke the game open late. In the seventh inning, Lausier came through again with a two-run single to extend the lead to 7-4. The Eagles then put the game away in the eighth, scoring three runs on a series of hits and a passed ball to secure the 10-4 victory.
Rendell led the offensive effort with three hits and four runs scored, while Holmes went 4-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Lausier drove in a game-high four runs, and freshman Liam Kelley added two hits.
On the mound, sophomore Chris Lusignan got the start, allowing just three hits and no earned runs over four innings. Junior Noah Hurd earned the win in relief, tossing five innings and allowing one run while striking out three.
Game 2: Husson 9, UMaine-Farmington 4
The Eagles (13-16, 11-5 NAC) carried their offensive momentum into game two, erupting for four runs in the first inning. Freshman Preston Libby and Rendell opened the frame with back-to-back hits before Holmes delivered an RBI single. Kelley followed with an RBI double, and senior Hunter Curtis capped the inning with a two-run double to give Husson a 4-0 lead.
UMaine-Farmington (8-21, 6-10 NAC) chipped away with three runs in the third and another in the fourth to make it a one-run game at 5-4, but Husson again had an answer.
In the sixth inning, the Eagles broke through with four runs to put the game out of reach. Senior Colin Marshall sparked the rally with an RBI triple before Rendell added a run-scoring single. Holmes then delivered the decisive blow with a two-run home run to right-center, extending the lead to 9-4.
Holmes continued his standout day, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Rendell added two hits and three runs scored, while Curtis contributed two hits and two RBIs. Libby also recorded a pair of hits in the win.
Husson utilized a bullpen effort in game two, with five pitchers combining to limit UMaine-Farmington to four runs. Senior Ben Phillips earned the win with two solid innings of relief, while senior Tanner Audyatis and junior Ryan Garner each tossed scoreless innings to close out the victory.
The Eagles look to cap off another NAC series win tomorrow when they host the Beavers for another doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m., while senior day festivities will begin at 12:15 p.m. at the Winkin Complex.
