DELHI, N.Y. – The No. 20 Husson University softball extended its winning streak in dominant fashion on Friday afternoon, sweeping SUNY Delhi in a conference doubleheader at Robert S. Brown Field with a 13-1 victory in five innings in game one followed by a 9-1 win in game two.
Game 1: No. 20 Husson 13, SUNY Delhi 1 (5 Innings)
In the opener, Husson (26-4, 9-0 NAC) broke through in the second inning and never looked back before erupting for an 11-run fifth inning to end the game early. After putting runners in motion in the second, senior Emily Dunbar delivered a double to left center to set up the scoring opportunity, and sophomore Allie Casavant followed by reaching on an error that allowed senior Tayler Watterson to score for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles added to the advantage in the fourth when freshman Jetta Shook doubled and later came home on a Dunbar single through the left side, making it 2-0. That set the stage for a decisive fifth inning in which Husson sent 16 batters to the plate and piled up 11 runs on 11 hits.
Freshman Sophia Lynch drove in the first run of the inning with a single, before junior Camryn King and senior Morgan Curtis delivered back-to-back doubles to plate two more. Senior Morgan Tainter followed with an RBI single, and the Eagles continued to apply pressure with RBI contributions from Watterson, Dunbar, and Lynch. Curtis added another two-run single later in the frame, and Tainter capped the scoring with an RBI knock as Husson built a commanding 13-0 lead. SUNY Delhi (9-17, 4-5 NAC) managed a run in the bottom half, but the damage had already been done.
Curtis led the offensive surge with two hits and four RBIs, while Dunbar finished a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs. King, Tainter, Shook, and Lynch all recorded multiple hits as part of Husson's 16-hit performance.
In the circle, junior Ana Lang was dominant, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out 11 over five innings to improve to 15-3 on the season.
Game 2: No. 20 Husson 9, SUNY Delhi 1 (6 Innings)
Husson (27-4, 10-0 NAC) carried that momentum into game two, jumping out to an early lead and controlling the game throughout in a 9-1 victory. King ignited the offense in the first inning with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice by Curtis to give the Eagles a 1-0 edge.
The Eagles broke the game open in the second inning, capitalizing on both timely hitting and defensive miscues. Freshman Sydney Carnes singled and advanced into scoring position, while King was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Curtis then delivered the big blow with a single that brought in three runs, aided by an error that allowed an additional run to score. Tainter later reached on an error that plated another run, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Husson added two more in the fourth inning as senior Lydia Rice doubled home a run and Dunbar followed with an RBI double of her own to extend the lead to 7-0. After SUNY Delhi (9-18, 4-6 NAC) scored its lone run in the bottom half, the Eagles continued to add insurance, scoring once in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Curtis and again in the sixth when freshman Lilly Snow drove in a run with a single.
Curtis once again led the way offensively, finishing with five RBIs in game two, while Rice recorded two hits and an RBI. King scored twice at the top of the lineup, and Snow added an RBI knock late in the game.
Junior Jazmin Johnson earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing one run on four hits and striking out three to move to 4-0 on the season.
The Eagles conclude their trip to New York tomorrow when they take on SUNY Cobleskill in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
