WATERVILLE, Maine – The No. 20 Husson University softball team completed a dominant doubleheader sweep over Thomas College on Tuesday afternoon, combining for 26 runs across two decisive victories, taking game one 13-0, before closing things out with a 13-1 victory.
Game 1: No. 20 Husson 13, Thomas 0 (5 Innings)
Husson (24-4, 7-0 NAC) wasted no time setting the tone in game one, erupting for seven runs in the top of the first inning. After senior Morgan Curtis reached on an error, senior Morgan Tainter launched a two-run home run to open the scoring. Senior Lydia Rice followed with a triple and came home on a freshman Jetta Shook RBI single before the Eagles continued to apply pressure. Freshman Sophia Lynch delivered a two-run double, and junior Camryn King capped the inning with a two-run triple to give Husson a commanding 6-0 advantage.
The Eagles added four more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Lynch and another RBI double from King. Husson pushed across two additional runs in the fourth, taking advantage of defensive miscues and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Allie Casavant to extend the lead to 12-0.
In the circle, junior Ana Lang was dominant, tossing three hitless innings with six strikeouts to earn the win before junior Jazmin Johnson closed out the final two frames. Offensively, King led the way with four RBIs, while Lynch drove in three runs and collected two doubles. Tainter added a two-run homer as Husson cruised to a 13-0 victory in five innings.
Game 2: No. 20 Husson 13, Thomas 1 (6 Innings)
Game two followed a similar script as Husson (25-4, 8-0 NAC) jumped out early and never looked back. The Eagles struck for two runs in the first inning as King doubled and later scored on a Tainter RBI double before Shook added an RBI single. Husson continued to build its lead with two runs in the second, including a solo home run from Casavant and an RBI single from Tainter.
Senior Emily Dunbar added a solo home run in the third inning, and the Eagles broke the game open in the fourth when Rice launched a two-run homer to extend the lead to 8-0. Thomas (14-17, 7-3 NAC) managed its lone run of the day in the bottom half of the inning, but Husson responded emphatically in the sixth.
The Eagles plated five runs in the final frame, capitalizing on defensive errors and timely hitting. Rice delivered her second home run of the game with a two-run shot, and King capped the scoring with a two-run double to push the lead to 13-1.
Lang was again outstanding in the circle, pitching a complete game while allowing just one run on four hits and striking out 12. At the plate, Rice powered the offense with two home runs and four RBIs, while King went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Tainter added three hits and three RBIs in the nightcap as Husson secured the 13-1 victory.
The Eagles will now turn their attention to a weekend New York trip, as they will head to SUNY Delhi on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
