BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University softball team used a dominant offensive showing in game one and a strong pitching performance in game two to sweep a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from the Vermont State University Johnson Badgers on Saturday afternoon at O'Keefe Field.
Game 1: No. 20 Husson 20, VTSU Johnson 0 (5 Innings)
Husson (16-3, 1-0 NAC) opened the day with a 20-0 run-rule victory, exploding for 18 runs over the first two innings to take full control early. The Eagles capitalized on a combination of timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and defensive miscues to build an 8-0 lead in the first inning. After junior Camryn King reached and stole her way into scoring position, Husson took advantage of errors and delivered key hits, including a two-run single from senior Emily Dunbar and a sacrifice fly from senior Tayler Watterson. King later capped the inning with a three-run home run to left-center, pushing the lead to eight.
The offense continued to surge in the second inning, plating 10 runs on 11 hits. Dunbar drove in another run, sophomore Allie Casavant delivered a two-run double, and freshman Lilly Snow added an RBI single. King continued her standout performance with an RBI double, while seniors Morgan Tainter and Lydia Rice each drove in multiple runs during the inning as Husson extended the lead to 18-0.
Husson added two more runs in the third inning on RBI singles from freshman Braelynn Wilcox and Sydney Carnes to complete the scoring. King led the Eagles with three hits, including a home run, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Dunbar added two hits and three RBIs, while Rice and Casavant each recorded two RBIs. Tainter also drove in three runs as part of the 17-hit attack.
In the circle, junior Ana Lang was dominant, striking out eight over three hitless innings to earn the win, while junior Sierra Yates closed out the game by allowing just one hit and striking out four over the final two innings.
Game 2: No. 20 Husson 7, VTSU Johnson 0
In game two, Husson (17-3, 2-0 NAC) completed the sweep with a 7-0 victory behind a complete-game shutout from junior Jazmin Johnson. Johnson allowed just three hits while striking out nine and walking two over seven innings to control the game from start to finish.
After being held scoreless through two innings, the Eagles broke through in the third when senior Morgan Curtis delivered an RBI single following aggressive baserunning by King, who stole second and third before scoring. Husson extended the lead in the fourth inning as Watterson launched a two-run home run and freshman Sophia Lynch followed with a solo shot, the first of her career, to make it 4-0.
The Eagles added three more runs in the fifth inning with a power display, as freshman Jetta Shook and Tainter hit back-to-back solo home runs before Lynch drove in another run with an RBI single to cap the scoring, as Shook's long-ball marked the first for her as a member of the green and gold.
Watterson finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Lynch recorded two hits and two RBIs. Curtis, Shook, and Tainter each drove in a run, and King reached base twice and stole four bases to set the tone offensively.
The Eagles look to cap off a perfect weekend at home on Sunday when they host Vermont State University Lyndon for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
