HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Husson University men's lacrosse team erupted for nine first-quarter goals and never looked back as the Eagles defeated Centenary University (N.J.), 23–2, on Monday afternoon at J.E. Reeves Field.
The Eagles (3-0) controlled the game from the opening faceoff, scoring the first nine goals of the contest in a dominant first quarter. Senior Kiernan Field opened the scoring at the 13:08 mark off an assist from sophomore Taylor Schwalje before freshman Alek Duprey followed just 29 seconds later with a goal, also set up by Schwalje, to make it 2–0. Senior Aidan Byers then scored from sophomore Dominic Hollenkamp and Hollenkamp added a goal off a feed from sophomore Brian Peabody as Husson quickly built a four-goal advantage.
Freshman Gabe Robinson pushed the lead to 5–0 after finishing a pass from Duprey before sophomore Camren Dufour scored off an assist from Peabody. Duprey added his second goal of the quarter off a pass from Field and Field followed with his second goal, assisted by Dufour. Sophomore Cody Dingwell capped the explosive opening period with a goal from graduate student Jack Kaszubinski to give the Eagles a 9–0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
Husson continued to pour on the offense in the second quarter. Graduate student Dean Sinkler opened the scoring in the period with a goal off an assist from Field before Centenary (0-1) got on the board with an unassisted tally from Lucas Bova. The Eagles quickly responded as Dufour scored off a pass from freshman Eric Cunha and Dufour added two more goals of his own, with assists going to Kaszubinski and junior Owen Giorgio. Field later scored off a feed from Dufour to extend the lead to 14–1 before Dufour completed his five-goal performance on another feed from Giorgio. Centenary added a late goal from Marty Zoet, but Husson held a commanding 15–2 halftime lead.
The Eagles remained in control after the break, outscoring Centenary 7–0 in the third quarter. Field opened the half with an unassisted goal before adding another off an assist from Hollenkamp. Hollenkamp then scored off a pass from Dingwell while Byers and Robinson each added unassisted goals. Sophomore Drew Held found the back of the net on a feed from Sinkler and Sinkler closed the period with his second goal of the game off of a feed from Field to make it 22–2 heading into the final quarter.
Junior Evan Carmody scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter to finish the scoring for Husson.
Field led the Eagles with five goals and three assists, while Dufour recorded five goals and two assists. Hollenkamp and Duprey each scored twice, while Byers and Robinson also finished with two goals apiece.
Husson dominated statistically, holding advantages in shots (47–7), shots on goal (37–6), ground balls (24–2) and faceoffs (27–2). Junior Brad Stolt was strong at the faceoff X, winning all 14 draws he took for the Eagles.
Sophomore Kyle Plummer earned the win in goal, recording two saves in the opening quarter. Sophomore Jeremy Rousseau added two saves in the second quarter while senior Cohen Trnka and senior Odin Burk each played a quarter in net for Husson.
The Eagles close out their spring break trip on Wednesday at Hood College with the first faceoff set for 12 p.m.
