Men’s lacrosse can’t overcome slow start against Hood in first loss of season

FREDERICK, Md. – The Husson University men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest to Hood College on Wednesday evening at Thomas Athletic Field, falling by a final score of 15–6 in its first loss of the season.

Hood (4-2) struck first early in the opening quarter, scoring just 50 seconds apart to build a quick 2–0 advantage. Husson (3-1) responded midway through the frame when freshman Gabe Robinson finished a pass from senior Kiernan Field with 4:58 remaining in the quarter to cut the deficit to one. The hosts answered later in the period with a man-up goal to take a 3–1 lead into the second quarter.

The Eagles found themselves facing a larger deficit in the second quarter as Hood capitalized on multiple extra-man opportunities and a scoring burst midway through the period to extend the lead to 7–1. Husson was able to get one back in the final seconds of the half when junior Owen Giorgio converted a man-up opportunity with just three seconds remaining, again assisted by Field, sending the Eagles into halftime trailing 7–2.

Hood continued to push the pace in the third quarter, scoring six goals in the period. Giorgio added his second goal of the night during a two-man advantage at the 7:38 mark to make the score 9–3, but Hood responded with four goals over the remainder of the quarter to take a 13–3 lead into the final frame.

Husson mounted a small rally early in the fourth quarter with three straight goals. Field started the surge with an unassisted tally at 14:06, and sophomore Dominic Hollenkamp followed just over a minute later with another unassisted strike. Robinson then added his second goal of the game at the 9:38 mark to trim the deficit to 13–6. Hood closed the scoring with two late goals to secure the 15–6 victory.

Giorgio and Robinson each led Husson with two goals apiece, while Field finished with a goal and two assists for three points. Hollenkamp added a goal as well. Giorgio also contributed five ground balls to lead the Eagles in that category.

In goal, senior Odin Burk made 11 saves for Husson while facing 41 shots. The Eagles recorded 33 shots in the contest and successfully cleared the ball on 19 of their 27 attempts.

Husson returns to the Pine Tree State and will head to Biddeford on Saturday to take on the University of New England at 1 p.m.
