DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Husson University baseball team used a seven-run sixth inning to erase an early deficit and power past Sage College, 13–7, on Wednesday evening, earning first-year head coach Zach Sugar his first win at the helm, at the Northeast Regional Park complex at the RussMatt Invitational.
Sage (3-2) grabbed the early advantage in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, a walk forced in the game's first run before a groundout brought home another to give Sage a 2–0 lead. The visitors added to their advantage in the sixth inning with three runs on three hits, including an RBI double and an RBI single, to push the margin to 5–0.
Husson (1-3) answered emphatically in the bottom of the sixth with a seven-run rally. Sophomore Trevor Poisson started the inning with a single before senior Keegan Cyr followed with a base hit to put two aboard. Senior Cam Rendell quickly cut into the deficit with a three-run home run to bring the Eagles within 5–3.
The rally continued as senior Hunter Curtis worked a walk and junior Henry Lausier singled to keep the pressure on. Matt Holmes then delivered an RBI double to left field, and Husson tied the game moments later when a passed ball allowed Lausier to score. Poisson capped the inning with a two-run double that drove in two more runs and gave the Eagles their first lead of the night at 7–5.
The Eagles continued to add insurance in the seventh inning. Cyr opened the frame with a walk before Rendell singled and Lausier drew another walk to load the bases. Holmes forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk, freshman John Hanlon added an RBI walk, and Poisson drew another bases-loaded walk to extend the Husson lead to 10–5.
After Sage pushed across an unearned run in the eighth inning, Husson responded again in the bottom half. Cyr singled and later scored on a passed ball before Holmes delivered a two-run single to right field, stretching the advantage to 13–6. Sage added a run in the ninth, but Husson closed out the victory to secure the six-run win.
Rendell led the Eagles offensively, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Holmes added two hits and four RBIs, while Poisson finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Cyr scored three runs and collected two hits, and Lausier crossed the plate three times.
On the mound, freshman Max Hopkins earned the win with two innings of relief work. Rendell started the game for Husson before giving way to sophomore Noah Hurd, senior Allen Wheaton, and junior Ryan Garner, who combined to hold Sage to seven runs on seven hits.
Husson recorded nine hits and drew nine walks in the contest while scoring 13 runs to secure the victory.
The Eagles will look to carry their momentum into a 3:45 p.m. contest on Thursday with Marymount University (Va.).
