FARMINGTON, Maine — Sophomore Cesar Soucre converted a first-half penalty kick as the Husson University men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four matches with a 1-0 North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday.
Husson (3-3-2, 2-0 NAC) created opportunities early, with Soucre sending an attempt wide in the eighth minute before freshman Santiago Jimenez struck the post in the ninth minute.
The Eagles broke through at 12:27 when Soucre converted from the penalty spot for his third goal of the season, giving Husson a 1-0 advantage.
Husson continued to apply pressure, generating attempts from sophomore Lucas Alabiso and Soucre in the 18th minute before sophomore Jorge Mora added two shots in the 20th minute.
The Beavers (2-8-1, 1-3 NAC) threatened midway through the half, earning consecutive corner kicks before Jack Luciano put a header on target in the 27th minute. Sophomore Adne Glotheim recorded a defensive save to keep Farmington off the scoreboard and preserve the Eagles' lead.
Husson entered halftime ahead 1-0 after holding an 11-3 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes.
The Eagles resumed their offensive pressure after the break, with freshman Ludovico Barosi and Alabiso each having attempts blocked in the opening five minutes. Lorenzo Ceruti followed with two shots three seconds apart in the 51st minute, forcing Farmington goalkeeper Parker Day into a save on the second attempt.
Jimenez tested Day again in the 68th minute as Husson looked to extend its advantage. The Eagles threatened once more in the 78th minute, with a Jimenez attempt blocked before junior Zain Uddin put a shot on target that Day stopped.
Husson's defense limited Farmington to three off-target attempts in the second half. The Eagles earned three corner kicks late in the contest and maintained their one-goal advantage through the final whistle to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Sophomore Liam Mason played earned the shutout, with Glotheim providing the stop on Farmington's lone shot on target.
Jimenez led Husson with six shots, while Soucre and Alabiso recorded four apiece. The Eagles finished with a 22-6 advantage in shots, including a 4-1 margin in shots on goal, and held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Husson will host Thomas College in its conference home opener Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at John P. Boucher Field.
