BANGOR, Maine – A fast start and consistent execution on the offensive end helped the Husson University men's basketball team secure a 92-85 North Atlantic Conference victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon inside Newman Gymnasium.
Husson improved to 12-7 overall and 11-2 in league play behind a balanced attack that saw five Eagles score in double figures, led by a game and career-high 35 points from senior Eric Ahlers.
The Eagles (12-7, 11-2 NAC) wasted little time setting the tone, jumping out to an early advantage behind efficient shooting and strong ball movement. Husson opened the game shooting over 60% from the floor in the first half and built a double-digit lead midway through the period. Ahlers connected on four first-half three-pointers, while junior Andre McCauley and senior Gil Matondo consistently finished inside to help Husson carry a 48-39 lead into halftime.
Maine Maritime (7-13, 7-6 NAC) made several pushes in the second half, cutting the deficit to as few as one possession on multiple occasions, but Husson answered each time with timely baskets. Ahlers continued to pace the offense with strong takes to the rim and perimeter shooting, while Marcus Schade and Drew Hamilton provided key scoring stretches to keep the visitors from gaining momentum.
With just under seven minutes to play, Husson rattled off a crucial run sparked by defensive stops and transition opportunities, pushing the lead back to multiple possessions. Free throws down the stretch sealed the win as the Eagles went 10-for-11 from the line in the second half.
Ahlers finished with 35 points on 13-of-18 shooting, including six three-pointers. Matondo added 16 points, while McCauley chipped in 14 points and six assists. Hamilton scored 25 points for Maine Maritime in the loss.
As a team, Husson shot 61.4% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc, while also forcing 17 turnovers. The Eagles also held a 31-21 edge on the glass and outscored the Mariners 40-34 in the paint.
Husson will return to action with its final non-conference game of the year on Tuesday when it heads to Bowdoin College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
