LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – The Husson University women's basketball team used a 24-11 scoring advantage in the third quarter to overcome a three-point halftime deficit and pick up a 69-60 North Atlantic Conference victory over Vermont State University Lyndon on Sunday afternoon on the road.
A back-and-forth first quarter that saw four ties and six lead changes between Husson (8-5, 7-2 NAC) and Lyndon (9-6, 4-4 NAC) saw the Eagles get 10 points from sophomore Lilly Roy, but neither team was able to gain any ground, as the period ended in a 19-19 tie.
The second period was more of the same, as the Eagles became the first team to lead by more than one possession when they took two leads of four points in the frame, but it was Lyndon who took a 32-29 lead into the halftime break.
The Hornets recorded the first two baskets of the second half to take the largest lead of the contest at that point of seven, but Husson was able to answer.
Husson bested Lyndon 24-7 after that point in the quarter to take a 10-point lead into the final 10 minutes, as back-to-back three-pointers from Roy to end the period stretched the lead to double-digits and gave the Eagles some breathing room.
The Hornets kept fighting, getting the deficit back down to four with under four minutes remaining, but the huge third period from Husson was enough for it to hang on for its seventh conference win of the season.
Roy totaled 23 points for the game to lead all scorers, while sophomore Saige Evans posted another double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, in addition to three steals.
Senior Laela Martinez played an all-around great game, as she finished with 12 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
The Eagles shot just over 37% from the floor for the game, while also connecting on 11 of 14 shots from the foul line to put the game away, in addition to holding a big edge in points off turnovers, as they bested Lyndon 26-3 in the category, forcing 20 turnovers from the Hornets.
Husson returns to non-conference action on Wednesday when it hosts Colby College at 7 p.m.
