BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team couldn't overcome a rough stretch in the third quarter against Colby College on Wednesday evening, as the Eagles fell 61-47 inside Newman Gymnasium, snapping their four-game win streak.
Husson (8-6) started out hot to begin the midweek, non-conference battle, as it scored the first eight points of the contest and held Colby (10-4) scoreless for nearly the first three minutes.
The Mules answered with the next eight points to tie the game back up, but three-pointers from sophomore Lilly Roy and freshman Sophia Carnes gave the Eagles a 14-8 lead after the opening period.
Colby began the second period with the first six points to once again tie the game back up and the two teams would go back-and-forth to end the first half, as a second quarter that saw two ties and five lead changes was capped off by a buzzer-beater three from Kate Olenik to send Colby into the locker room with a 27-26 lead.
The Mules took complete control of the contest in the third quarter, outscoring Husson 19-6, to take a 46-32 lead into the final quarter.
The two teams played to a deadlock 15-15 score in the final 10 minutes, but the damage had already been done by the Mules during their decisive third quarter.
Senior Laela Martinez led the Eagles offensively with 12 points and two steals, while sophomore Saige Evans extended her streak of consecutive double-doubles to four-straight games with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance.
The stifling Colby defense held Husson to just a 31% shooting clip, while also forcing Husson into 19 turnovers, which led to 28 Mule points.
The Eagles will look to bounce back on Friday when they host Thomas College in a pivotal North Atlantic Conference game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
