Women’s basketball cruises to NAC win over VTSU Johnson behind 22-point performance from Evans

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Husson University women's basketball team fell behind by nine points midway through the opening quarter on Saturday afternoon, but the Eagles were in full control from that point on, as they topped Vermont State University Johnson 87-65 on Saturday afternoon on the road.

After falling behind 16-7 with just over four minutes left in the first quarter, Husson (7-5, 6-2 NAC) was able to finish the opening period on a 13-2 run to take a 20-18 edge into the second quarter.

The Eagles carried that late momentum into the second quarter, where the Badgers (3-12, 2-6 NAC) knotted the game up at 20, but Husson used another big run, this time 17-2, to take a commanding 37-22 lead almost exactly halfway through the period.

Husson connected on three three-pointers during the run and got 13 of its 17 points from the bench to build up its lead, but Johnson was able to end the half on a strong note, as it brought the score to 39-30 in favor of the Eagles headed into the locker room.

Sophomore Saige Evans led the Eagles with 12 points and five rebounds in the opening half, while freshman Sophia Carnes connected on three shots from beyond the arc off the bench.

Husson was able to regain form in the third period after the strong end to the first half by the Badgers, as the Eagles poured in 31 points in the period and outscored Johnson by 14 to take a 23-point lead into the final quarter.

Evans was the orchestrator of the Husson offense in the big offensive quarter, tallying 10 points, four rebounds and three assists in the period, as seven other Eagles scored in the period.

Husson was able to keep its lead at or above 20 points for the majority of the final period and cruised to its third-straight conference win.

Evans paced the Eagles with a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double, while sophomore Lilly Roy added 15 and Carnes converted on one additional three-pointer in the second half to finish with 12.

Husson shot 37% from the floor as a team, including 12-28 from beyond the arc, in addition to 15-21 from the foul line, while outrebounding the Badgers 49-29 and forcing 26 turnovers from Johnson.

The Eagles look to cap off a perfect week of conference action tomorrow when they head to Vermont State University Lyndon with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
