GORHAM, Maine – The Husson University women's volleyball team was defeated twice on Saturday afternoon at the University of Southern Maine tri-match, falling to Salve Regina 3-0, before the hosts of Southern Maine won 3-1 over the Eagles.
Salve Regina 3, Husson 0
Husson (0-5) battled Salve Regina (3-1) to a 6-5 score in favor of the Seahawks early on, but an 8-1 run from Salve opened up an eight-point lead, which led to a 25-17 victory in set one.
The second set was more of the same, as the Eagles trailed just 18-14, but seven of the final 10 points went the way of the Seahawks to put them up 2-0.
Husson looked to fight back in set three, jumping out to a 5-1 lead, but Salve Regina fought back to take an 11-10 lead. With the score at 16-15 in favor of the Seahawks, Salve Regina went on a 9-3 run to close out the set win and take the match.
Freshman Kate McPhee led Husson with four kills, while fellow freshman Peyton Hooker posted 10 assists.
Sophomore Mikayla Gray and Hooker tied for the team lead with four digs, while junior Alana Peruti posted four service aces.
Southern Maine 3, Husson 1
Southern Maine (1-5) jumped on Husson (0-6) right away to open the match, as it raced out to an 11-2 lead and the Eagles couldn't rebound and the Huskies took the first set 25-14.
Husson showed more fight in set number two, trailing just 10-9 through the first 19 points, but a 10-2 run from Southern Maine extended its lead and allowed them to take a two set lead with a 25-14 win.
The Eagles were the runs who used a scoring run to open up a lead in set three, as with the score at 12-12, Husson rattled off the next four points to take a 16-12 lead and a kill from Peruti shut down a USM rally to give the Eagles a 25-22 win in set three.
Another closely contested set occurred in set four with Husson leading 11-9, but the Huskies were able to find their rhythm on offense, as they outscored the Eagles 16-6 for the rest of the set to take the fourth set and the match.
Gray paced Husson with 10 kills, in addition to adding eight digs, while junior Janna Preskorn tallied seven kills and 13 digs and Hooker dished out 26 assists.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday when they head to the University of Maine at Fort Kent for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.
