FORT KENT, Maine – The Husson University women's volleyball team battled through five sets on the road Wednesday night but came up just short, falling 3-2 to the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
The Eagles (0-7) came out strong, taking the opening set 25-21 behind steady serving and timely swings at the net. Husson used a balanced attack early, with sophomore Mikayla Gray and graduate student Julia Leavitt each contributing key kills to help the visitors seize momentum.
UMFK (1-3) responded in the second and third sets, capitalizing on Husson errors to grab a 2-1 match lead. Despite the setback, the Eagles refused to fold. In a thrilling fourth set, Husson clawed its way back from multiple deficits and closed the frame on a late surge, highlighted by freshman Peyton Hooker's serving run that included three aces down the stretch. The Eagles edged the Bengals 26-24 to force a decisive fifth.
In the final set, however, UMFK regained control, opening on a 6-1 run and never looking back to secure the match.
Hooker paced the Eagles with four kills and 11 assists, while also firing four aces. Gray added four kills and two service aces, while Leavitt contributed five kills and solid back row defense. Junior Alana Peruti anchored the block with two solo stuffs.
The Eagles will look to bounce back this weekend when they head to Framingham State University for a tri-match with matchups against Norwich University and Framingham State on Saturday.
