BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team looked to have finished off its first win over Bates College since 2010 on Wednesday evening at Boucher Field, but a 1-0 Husson lead with under three minutes remaining turned into a 2-1 victory for Bates thanks to two goals in less than 30 seconds.
Despite a dominant display of possession from Bates (1-0) through the first 40 minutes of the opening half of Husson's (1-2) home-opener, the backline of the Eagles held strong to limit quality chances for the Bobcats.
With Husson appearing to be headed into the halftime break with just one total shot, the Eagles were able to change their luck with a set-piece opportunity just past the midfield line late in the period.
Senior Caley Nault floated a ball high into the 18-yard box near the penalty spot, where it met the head of a leaping junior Lyndsee Reed, who managed to get enough power on the ball and send it over the goal line and give the Eagles a 1-0 edge.
Husson carried that one-goal lead into the break despite being outshot 8-2, including 4-1 in shots on target, in addition to having no corner kicks, compared to six for the Bobcats.
The Eagles kept their late-half momentum going into the second 45 minutes, as they pressed high on the Bates defense, not allowing the Bobcats to build a strong attack.
Husson's defense continued to hold strong for much of the second half, but a foul deep in the Husson defensive end granted Bates a golden opportunity to knot the game up late in the contest and that's exactly what Gwyn Jamison did, as she placed a perfect shot in-between the outstretched hands of freshman goalie Gabriella Smith and the crossbar to tie the game up with 2:22 remaining.
Bates was not satisfied with just a tie however, as just 25 seconds later the Bobcats were back on the attack and Rachel Suh sent a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net to flip the game on its head and give Bates a 2-1 edge with just under two minutes remaining.
The Eagles were unable to mount a late comeback and were sent to their fourth-consecutive loss to the Bobcats.
Bates held a 15-7 edge in shots, including 7-3 in shots on target, while also generating eight corner kicks in the match and holding Husson to no opportunities from the corner flag.
Smith made five saves on seven shots that came her way in net for the Eagles.
Husson will look to rebound one week from today when it hosts Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 6 p.m.
