BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team capitalized late to secure a 1-0 victory over Vermont State-Johnson on Sunday afternoon at Boucher Field.
Husson (5-3-1, 2-0-1 NAC) would hold a dominant offensive attack all first half over Johnson (5-2-3, 2-2 NAC), getting 11 shots off with two of them on goal.
A rocket from outside the box in the 36th minute by junior Emma Nicholson looked like it would give the Eagles the lead, but a remarkable save by goalkeeper Isabel Atkisson would keep a 0-0 tie heading to halftime.
Husson would continue to have dominant control over possession in the second half, but the Badgers' defense would hold strong.
Johnson would finally push the ball into Eagle territory and get their first shot on goal in the 68th minute, but senior goalkeeper Madison Weigler would stop them short, earning her lone save of the match.
In the 77th minute, senior Devon St. Louis would intercept a pass just outside the Badgers' box, and would convert on it, hitting a shot that banged off the crossbar, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead that would be the final score.
Husson held a dominant 21-2 lead in shots, with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Weigler would play all 90 minutes in goal, recording a save and earning a shutout.
The Eagles will return to play on Saturday when they'll host the University of Maine Presque Isle at Boucher Field at noon for Senior Day.
