GORHAM, Maine – Junior Wessel Eldering scored his first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute to help the Husson University men's soccer team earn a hard-fought 1–1 draw at the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.
The Huskies (0-1-4) struck first just three minutes into the match when Alex Graver converted a penalty kick to give the hosts a 1–0 lead. Husson had a golden opportunity to level moments later, but senior Nico Puerta's penalty attempt in the eighth minute was turned aside by Southern Maine keeper Lukas Hammond, who finished with six saves.
Despite a 1–0 deficit at halftime, Husson (0-5-2) came out strong after the break. The Eagles generated 10 second-half shots and earned four corners while playing shorthanded for the final 23 minutes after receiving a red card in the 67th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Liam Mason kept the visitors within striking distance with four saves, including three in the second half.
The breakthrough came in the 82nd minute when freshman Cesar Soucre served a pinpoint ball into the box that Eldering calmly finished to knot the match at 1–1. Husson nearly found a winner in the closing minutes as Soucre hit the post in the 86th minute and freshman Jorge Mora fired just high seconds later.
Husson outshot Southern Maine 16–15 and held a 7–5 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles return to Bangor for their North Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday against Lesley University at 3:30 p.m.
