NORTON, Mass. – A four-goal second half from Wheaton College stretched a 2-1 halftime lead into a 6-1 final score, as Wheaton bested the Husson University men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Norton, Massachusetts.
Both Wheaton (4-0-1) and Husson (0-4-1) generated goals in the opening part of the first half, as a strike from Lyons at the 20:21 mark opened the scoring.
The Eagles responded just shy of three minutes later, as freshman Lucas Menchaca secured his first collegiate goal at the 23:18 mark, with helpers from fellow freshman Rique Mendes and Miguel Diaz Alvarez on a free kick from Diaz Alvarez that hit the head of Mendes and went right to Menchaca for the score.
Husson was able to hold off a ferocious offensive attack from Wheaton for nearly 10 minutes, but the Lyons regained control of the lead and carried that 2-1 edge into the halftime break.
Wheaton continued to apply heavy pressure on the Husson defense, as it found paydirt once again in the 54th minute to open up a two-goal lead.
The Lyons struck twice more in the span of 80 seconds to further extend their lead and would add on a final insurance goal in the 86th minute to put the finishing touches on a dominant offensive performance.
Wheaton outshot Husson 31-9 for the game, including 15-4 in shots on goal, while also holding an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
Freshman Yovanny Spilsbury made his first career start in net for the Eagles and recorded nine saves.
Husson will close out its weekend in Massachusetts with a battle against Tufts University, who was receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
