LEWISTON, Maine – The Husson University field hockey team was back in action for the first time in two weeks on Saturday afternoon, as No. 8 Bates College defeated Husson 7-0 at Campus Avenue Field in Lewiston.
Bates (5-0) and Husson (0-2) were both unable to generate a shot for the first five-plus minutes of the contest, with the Bobcats tallying the first quality chance, as a shot off the post, followed by a penalty stroke that was saved by freshman Ella Duchette kept the game scoreless.
Duchette tallied two more saves and senior Lauryn Brown had a chance on target turned away by Bates as it looked like the first period would end in 0-0 fashion, but a goal at the 13:46 mark from the Bobcats broke the scoreless tie and sent them into the second quarter with a 1-0 lead.
Bates continued its momentum into the second period with two more goals in the first six-plus minutes of action to take a 3-0 edge into the halftime break, while keeping the Eagles off the board.
The Bobcats continued their offensive dominance in the second half, as they held Husson without a shot in both the second and third periods, while adding two more tallies in the third quarter.
Husson had its lone opportunity in the fourth quarter turned away, as Bates posted two additional insurance goals to close out a commanding victory and remain unbeaten.
Bates posted 19 shots, including 11 on target, while the Eagles placed both of their shots on goal, in addition to the Bobcats holding a 9-1 lead in penalty corners.
Duchette made three saves for Husson in her 60 minutes of action in the cage.
The Eagles have a quick turnaround, as they will host Colby College tomorrow afternoon in their home-opener at 1 p.m.
