Field hockey downed by Skidmore in 2025 opener

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University field hockey team opened up its 2025 season with a neutral site contest against Skidmore College and ultimately fell to Thoroughbreds by a final score of 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at Thomas College's Bernatchez Field.

Skidmore (2-0) opened up the scoring not even one minute into the contest and doubled its lead at the 5:11 mark to quickly gain a two-goal advantage.

The Thoroughbreds tallied an additional goal less than two minutes before the end of the opening period to take a 3-0 edge into the second quarter.

Skidmore continued its offensive onslaught in the second quarter with goals at the 16:34 mark and the 20:40 mark to open up a 5-0 lead at the half.

Husson (0-1) found the scoreboard quickly into the second half off of an unassisted tally from senior Maddie Perkins, as the score would remain 5-1 headed into the final period.

Perkins brought the Eagles to within three goals at the start of the fourth quarter with her second score of the contest, but it was quickly answered with another goal from the Thoroughbreds to bring their advantage back to four goals.

Skidmore would tack on one final goal in the final minutes of the contest to pick up its second win of the weekend.

Husson was outshot 18-4 in the contest, including 12-2 in shots on goal, in addition to being bested in penalty corners 12-1.

Freshman Ella Duchette made the start in the cage for the Eagles in her first career game and made three saves.

Husson will be back in action on Sept. 13 when it travels to No. 8 Bates College at 12 p.m. for a non-conference contest.
