FARMINGTON, Maine – The Husson University baseball team began its final North Atlantic Conference series of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, as it took game one from the University of Maine at Farmington by a final of 17-1, while game two of the day was postponed due to inclement weather in the Farmington area.
After falling behind 1-0 after two innings of play, Husson (20-13, 12-3 NAC) erupted for seven runs in the top of the third inning to break open game one and come away with the win.
The Eagles got the inning started with an RBI-double from graduate student Akira Warren and an RBI-single from junior Cam Rendell to give Husson the lead, while sophomore Matt Holmes crushed a three-run shot for his 10th home run of the season to right field to extend the lead to 5-0.
Senior Tanner Evans added another run for the Eagles on a sacrifice fly to center field, while fellow senior Ryne Rametta tallied the final run of the big inning on a throwing error from the Farmington (9-25, 3-12 NAC) catcher.
Husson posted two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to push its advantage to 13-1, as graduate student Jackson Curtis added to his RBI and double records with an RBI-two bagger, while Evans hit into a fielder's choice to plate the second run of the fourth inning.
Rendell got the Eagles to double-digits in the fifth inning with an RBI-single and junior Hunter Curtis plated the 11th run of the contest with an RBI-groundout.
Sophomore Ryan Bousquet provided a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, while senior Justin Salvatore poked a single through the left side of the infield to conclude the scoring in the frame.
The Eagles concluded their offensive onslaught with four additional runs in the seventh inning, as RBI-singles from senior Tyler Michaud, Rametta and sophomore Tanner Crowley led to the first three runs, while a fielder's choice from junior Jack Cote brought Husson to its final tally of 17 runs.
Warren, Rendell and J. Curtis were lethal at the top of the Husson order, contributing nine of the 18 hits for the Eagles, while Holmes and junior Keegan Cyr added two hits each, while Rametta scored three runs.
Senior Connor Abood posted six strong innings on the mound en route to his third win of the year on the mound, surrendering just one run on three hits and a walk, while punching out three Beaver hitters. Sophomore Wyatt Stevens closed out the final inning with just one hit allowed.
Husson is scheduled to play a doubleheader with Farmington tomorrow on the road with first-pitch of game one set for 12 p.m.
