BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team concluded its regular season with a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the University of Maine at Farmington, dropping game one 6-5, before taking the series finale by a final of 12-0 at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex after the games were relocated to Bangor due to poor field conditions in Farmington.
GAME ONE: Farmington 6, Husson 5
A three-run bottom of the sixth inning for Farmington (10-25, 4-12 NAC) flipped a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 lead and the Beavers were able to hang on and take the first game of the day from Husson (20-14, 12-4 NAC).
The Eagles were able to strike first in the top-half of the second inning as graduate student Akira Warren blasted an RBI-triple into left-center field to plate junior Keegan Cyr and get Husson on the board.
Farmington countered in the home-half of the frame with two bases loaded walks and a sacrifice fly to take the lead.
Husson knotted the game at three in the top of the fifth on its second RBI-triple of the game, this time from sophomore Henry Lausier, to draw within one, while sophomore Ryan Bousquet drove in Lausier to tie the contest.
The Eagles regained possession of the lead one inning later on an RBI-single from senior Tanner Evans, which plated junior Colin Marshall.
With the bases loaded in Farmington's turn at the plate in the sixth and two batters retired, a weak ground ball back to the pitcher looked to have ended the inning, but an overthrow to first base sailed down the right field line and allowed the bases to clear and the Beavers to take a 6-4 lead headed into the final turn at-bat for Husson.
The Eagles made it interesting, as Lausier sent a solo homer over the left field fence to bring Husson back within a run, but the Beavers were able to get out of a bases loaded jam and hang on for the win.
Lausier and Warren led the way for Husson in game one with five of the seven hits, while Lausier either scored or drove in four of the five runs for the Eagles.
Graduate student Alex Smith got the start in game one, lasting four innings, while juniors Allen Wheaton and Cam Rendell also saw time on the hill.
GAME TWO: Husson 12, Farmington 0
10 runs combined in the second and seventh innings were more than enough for Husson (21-14, 13-4 NAC) to salvage a split on the day against Farmington (10-26, 4-13 NAC).
After a scoreless first inning, an RBI-single from Marshall got the scoring started for the Eagles, while a two-RBI single from Evans and a two-RBI triple from sophomore Matt Holmes broke open a 5-0 lead for Husson.
The Eagles added two runs to their lead in the fifth, as a sacrifice fly from Warren and an RBI-single from Evans extended the lead to 7-0.
Husson piled on even more in its final turn at the plate, as a bases loaded hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch brought the lead to double-digits, while RBI-singles from Lausier and junior Hunter Curtis closed the book on the scoring for the Eagles.
Evans and J. Curtis paced Husson with two hits apiece, while six other Eagles recorded base-knocks and Evans posted four RBIs and Marshall scored three runs.
Additionally for the Eagles, Holmes tied the single-game program record for walks with four free passes.
Six Husson pitchers combined for seven innings of five-hit, no-run ball, as sophomore Jack Lano earned the win with two innings pitched, while juniors Ben Phillips and Tanner Audyatis, freshman Avery Lawrence, senior Matt Wallingford and freshman Noah Hurd each tossed a scoreless frame.
Husson is back in action on Thursday as it looks to defend its NAC crown with the start of the conference tournament. Husson's opponent and game time for its first game will be announced by the league this week.
