BANGOR, Maine — Husson University head baseball coach Chris Morris announced his resignation on Wednesday, stepping down after six seasons at the helm of the Eagles to pursue another head coaching opportunity.
"Leaving Husson was a very difficult decision for me and my family," said Morris. "I am so grateful for all the memories that we have made and for the overwhelming support that the Husson community provided us over the past six years. Special thank you to our head assistant Zach Sugar, whom has been with me since day one, our baseball program would not be where it is today without your dedication and passion for Husson Baseball."
Since taking over the program in August 2019, Morris led the Eagles to unprecedented success. Under his leadership, Husson captured five-consecutive North Atlantic Conference Championships and made five-straight NCAA Regional appearances. He departs as one of the most successful coaches in program history, finishing with a 125-77 overall record and an impressive 74-11 mark in NAC play.
Morris played a pivotal role in elevating the program, mentoring numerous standout student-athletes. His tenure includes two NAC pitcher of the year honorees, one NAC player of the year, two NAC rookies of the year, two NAC senior scholar-athlete recipients, and 25 All-Conference selections.
"As both a former student-athlete and a coach at Husson University, Coach Morris has played a significant role in shaping the success of our program and the lives of our student-athletes," said interim director of athletics Janine Gmitter. "His commitment to excellence and mentorship has left a lasting legacy. While we're saddened to see him leave, we fully support his decision to pursue this exciting new opportunity and wish him and his family all the best as they start this new chapter. Coach Morris will always be a part of the Husson University family."
The program also earned national recognition during Morris' time, including three American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Awards, three ABCA/Rawlings All-Region selections, five D3baseball.com All-Region honorees, and nine College Sports Communicators Academic All-District awards.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Morris also served as Husson's Director of Facilities and Event Management. He played a key role in maintaining the University's athletic facilities and enhancing game-day operations for football and basketball.
