J. Curtis, Wallingford take home major awards in NAC all-conference announcement

WATERVILLE, Maine – The North Atlantic Conference announced its postseason awards for baseball on Wednesday and the Husson University baseball team saw two major awards winners come its way.

Graduate student Jackson Curtis was named player of the year for the league after a stellar year at the plate and in the field. Through Husson's North Atlantic Conference tournament run, Curtis has batted .394 for the year, which was third-best in the NAC, with 56 hits, including 13 doubles, one triple and eight home runs, while driving in 47 runs. Additionally, Curtis recorded 19 walks, five stolen bases, a 1.139 OPS and a near .500 on-base percentage, while making just one fielding error in 255 chances on defense and ranking near the top of the conference in nearly every batting category.

Senior Matt Wallingford took home his second-consecutive pitcher of the year award following a dominant season on the mound. Wallingford recorded a 1.56 earned-run average, which was the best in the NAC amongst qualified pitchers, in addition to a .99 WHIP, 46 strikeouts, just two extra-base hits allowed and a .185 batting average against in 40.1 innings pitched. The veteran right-hander earned two NAC pitcher of the week selections over the course of the regular season. 

In addition to J. Curtis and Wallingford earning spots on the all-conference first team, graduate student Akira Warren and sophomore Matt Holmes were also honored with first team selections.

Warren was second-best on the Eagles in batting average with a near .350 average, while also adding 45 hits, including seven doubles, three triples and three home runs, while driving in 31 runs. Warren also enters this weekend's NCAA regional action just four runs scored shy of tying the single-season program record, as he has scored a NAC-leading 50 runs this year, while also being just six walks shy of tying the single-season program record with his 36 free passes. Additionally, Warren has also stolen 23 bases and has been hit by a pitch nine times, leading to a .494 on-base percentage.

Holmes garnered the final first team spot following a campaign that saw him crush a league-best 10 home runs, in addition to posting six doubles and three triples. Holmes, who is the reigning NAC and Maine Softball and Baseball Coaches Association Rookie of the Year winner, is one home run shy of tying the single-season program record, while also driving in 41 runs.

Senior Tanner Evans picked up one of the two second team selections for the Eagles as a utility player, as he has recorded just shy of a .300 average thus far which is tied for third-best on the team. Evans has posted 36 base hits, including six doubles and two triples, while also driving in 18 runs and drawing 21 walks and swiping 14 bags.

Graduate student Alex Smith earned the final all-conference nod for Husson with a second team selection as a pitcher. Smith went 4-2 on the mound through the NAC playoffs in his final year with the Eagles, recording a 2.70 ERA, one complete game, two saves, a 1.09 WHIP and a .221 batting average against in 15 appearances, which allowed him to set a new program record for appearances by a pitcher in a career.

Additionally for the Eagles, head baseball coach Chris Morris and his staff were selected as the coaching staff of the year and senior Justin Salvatore was named to the all-sportsmanship team.

Husson is back in action on Friday for its first game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament Regionals, as the Eagles will take on No. 9 Kean University at 11 a.m. in Union, New Jersey.
