Baseball’s late-inning comeback falls short in mid-week loss to Bowdoin

Box Score BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University baseball team overcame a two-run deficit in the eighth inning before falling 4-3 in 10 innings to Bowdoin College Monday evening in non-conference action. 
 
Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Husson (17-10) scored two runs to tie the game 3-3 before forcing extra innings. 
 
Graduate student Akira Warren singled to lead off the inning before stealing second with two outs to move into scoring position. Sophomore Matt Holmes singled to right center scoring Warren for the Eagles second run. 
 
Following a Bowdoin (22-9) pitching change, Holmes stole second and read a pitch that bounced off the turf to steal third, moving 90 feet away from tying the game. Junior Hunter Curtis walked to extend the inning become sophomore Henry Lausier who entered as a pinch hitter single to third base to knot the game a 3-3. 
 
The Polar Bears managed to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th following a two-out home run, however, Husson didn't go down without a fight, with two outs in the bottom half of the 10th, Lausier walked and stole second. Senior Ryne Rametta extended the inning with another Eagles walk before sophomore Ryan Bousquet loaded the bases with the third-straight Bowdoin walk. 
 
Junior Keegan Cyr came to the plate with bases loaded, hitting a ball back up the middle that Bowdoin's short stop laid out for and managed to get the force out at second base to hold on for the 4-3 decision. 
 
Husson began Monday's in-state showdown leading 1-0 after the first inning, graduate student Jackson Curtis reached on a Bowdoin error before Holmes connected on an RBI double for the early advantage. 
 
The Polar Bears tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third before scoring two runs in the fourth for a 3-1 edge. 
 
Holmes finished 2-5 for the Eagles with two RBIs, while Warren, Hunter Curtis and Lausier added hits for the Eagles. 
 
Junior Ben Phillips pitched well in relief, tossing 2.2 innings of no-hit baseball with three strikeouts, before junior Tanner Audyatis added a scoreless inning with one strikeout and senior Connor Abood pitched the seventh and eighth innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two. 
 
Husson will now battle Bates College on the road Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
