BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's lacrosse team fell in a hard-fought, down-to-the-wire senior day contest against Thomas College, losing by a score of 12-11 at Boucher Field on Saturday afternoon.
Husson (7-7, 1-3 NAC) opened the scoring with back-to-back goals from junior Kiernan Field in the first five-plus minutes to put the Eagles up 2-0.
Thomas (4-9, 3-1 NAC) responded with a five-goal run over the next 20-plus minutes of action to take possession of a 5-2 lead late into the second quarter.
Husson had an answer of its own with four-consecutive goals which bled into the first five minutes of the second half, with Field adding two more goals and sophomore Drew Clinch and freshman Drew Held also finding the back of the net.
The Terriers outscored the Eagles 3-2 in the remainder of the third period to carry a 9-8 edge into a pivotal fourth quarter, as sophomore Owen Giorgio and freshman Owen Gray kept the Eagles going on offense.
Senior Sean Lyne knotted the game up at nine just over three minutes into the final quarter, but a goal from the Terriers around one minute later immediately gave them the lead back.
Gray responded with his second goal of the contest to bring the game back to even, but once again Thomas answered, as a goal 15 seconds after Gray's gave it the lead back, while a game-clincher with 1:34 left extended its lead to two goals.
Field made it interesting in the final minute, posting a goal in the final 10 seconds, but the Terriers were able to win the final faceoff of the game and come away with their first win over the Eagle since 2021.
Field's five goals led the Eagles on offense, while Giorgio recorded a goal and two assists and Gray posted two goals.
Husson bested Thomas 40-34 in shots, but the Terriers managed to hold a 25-22 edge in shots on goal.
Thomas held a big advantage in ground balls, posting 54, compared to just 37 for the Eagles, while Husson committed six less turnovers.
Junior Odin Burk made 13 saves in net for Husson, as the Eagles converted on 17-23 clear attempts on defense.
Prior to the game, Husson honored its senior class of Nathan Vibber, Lyne, Elijah Williams, Dean Sinkler, Casey Mills and Leighton Girardin.
The Eagles return to action one week from today for their regular season finale at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts with the first faceoff set to begin at 12 p.m.
