BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University softball team combined for 19 runs over two games to pick up a doubleheader split on the road against Rhode Island College in non-conference action.
Husson (7-9) struck first in Sunday's opening game, taking a 1-0 advantage when sophomore
Camryn King homered to left field for her first collegiate homer. However, Rhode Island (9-7) took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the first and extended its lead to 8-1 with six runs in the second.
The Eagles didn't go down without a fight, senior
Bulla McCabe connected on a two-RBI single in the third inning to pull within 8-3 and sophomore
Lyndsee Reed singled in the fourth to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Rhode Island added an insurance run in the bottom half of the fourth, but Husson cut the deficit back to 9-7 with a run in the fifth off the bat of senior
Kiara McLeod and two runs in the sixth inning, the first when graduate student
Julia Gregoire was hit by a pitch with bases loaded and the second on an RBI fielder choice from junior
Lexi Volinsky.
However, Rhode Island benefited from a three-RBI double in the sixth inning to run the score back to 12-7. Reed connected on her first collegiate homerun in the seventh inning — a two-run shot to left field to pull back within 12-9 and Gregoire added her second and third RBI's on the game with a double to make it 12-11, but Rhode Island managed to come away with the opening-game decision.
The Eagles finished the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with 17 hits as a team, Reed, McLeod, Gregoire and senior
Tatyanna Biamby each finished with three hits apiece, while King and McCabe tallied two hits each.
In Sunday's doubleheader finale, Husson led 4-0 following the first inning, Biamby singled in the first run, followed by an RBI single by McCabe and a two-RBI double from senior
Tori Exel for an early lead.
Rhode Island cut into the Eagles led with three runs in the first inning and tied the game 4-4 with another run in the second. However, Exel answered the call for the Eagles with her second two-RBI double of the game for a 6-4 advantage.
Husson's two-run edge was tied in the third inning by Rhode Island, but Gregoire game the Eagles a 7-6 lead with a single in the fourth and Volinsky drove in the eventual game-winning RBI in the fifth inning on an infield single.
Rhode Island added a run in the sixth inning, but Husson held on for the 8-7 win and snapped a six-game skid against Rhode Island.
Gregoire and Exel each finished with three hits for the Eagles, while King and junior
Morgan Tainter each contributed two hits. Husson finished 15 hits in Sunday's finale, while graduate student
Sky Johnson went the distance pitching a complete game, striking out six.
The Eagles return to action on Apr. 2 when they host Colby College for their 2025 home season opener at Robert & Frances O'Keefe Softball Field at 3 and 5 p.m.
