BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University men's lacrosse team put together a complete team effort on Saturday beating SUNY Cobleskill 17-9 in its North Atlantic Conference opener.
Husson (7-3, 1-0 NAC) jumped out 3-0 over SUNY Cobleskill (1-2, 0-1 NAC) in the opening 10 minutes of Saturday's conference showdown.
Senior
Nathan Vibber scored the first of his two goals on the day to open the scoring off an assist by freshman
Taylor Schwalje, while junior
Kiernan Field added back-to-back scores, the second from sophomore
Drew Clinch.
The Fighting Tigers pulled withing 3-2 of the Eagles with 2:40 remaining in the opening quarter, but Husson scored three unanswered goals to close out the quarter and take a 6-2 edge into the second quarter.
Clinch scored the Eagels fourth goal, followed by Schwalje from senior
Sean Lyne and Field completed a first-half hat trick for the 6-2 edge.
Clinch scored his second goal of the game to begin the second quarter, while sophomore
Evan Carmody found the back of the net from freshman
Casey Mills for an 8-2 advantage.
Cobleskill got back on the board with its third goal, but another from Field made it 9-3.
The Fighting Tigers ended the quarter on a 2-1 scoring run to pull within 10-5, sophomore
Owen Giorgio scored for the Eagles to end the half.
Husson came out of the half clicking on all cylinders rolling off a 4-0 run with goals from Schwalje, Field, Giorgio and Field to take a commanding 14-5 edge.
Cobleskill scored back-to-back goals over the final two minutes of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 14-6, but three fourth-quarter goals from Vibber, Field and freshman
Cody Dingwell ran the score to 17 goals for the Eagles who held on for the 17-9 decision.
Field dominated offensively, matching a season-high seven goals, adding one assist, while Schwalje, Giorgio, Vibber and Clinch each added two goals apiece. Clinch also added two assists along with Schwalje.
Giorgio finished with an impressive 12 ground balls and five turnovers, while sophomore
Brad Stolt added nine ground balls and finished 10-16 on faceoffs. Freshman
Brian Peabody added an 8-14 faceoff advantage.
Husson finished the matchup with 43 ground balls. 47 shots and 29 shots on goal.
Sophomore
AJ Torres got the start in cage making three saves of the first 30 minutes, before junior
Odin Burk added five saves over the remaining 30 minutes.
The Eagles will now host Salem State University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
