DANVILLE, Va. – After starting its spring trip schedule with three-straight wins, the Husson University men's lacrosse team dropped its contest against the Averett University Cougars by a score of 18-10 on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles (4-2) managed to jump out to a 2-0 lead thanks to quick scores from both freshman Kiernan Field and senior Nathan Vibber. However, the remainder of the opening period was all Cougars (3-6), scoring five straight goals, sending Husson to the second quarter with a 5-2 deficit.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as Averett scored another four straight to take a 9-2 lead. The Eagles finished the first half strong though, with Field adding two more goals to the Eagles' total, reducing the lead to five as both teams entered the halftime break.
Field started the third quarter right where he left off, finding the back of the net in the first four minutes of the second half. Senior Sean Lyne also tallied a third period goal, but Husson moved to the final quarter down 13-6.
The Eagles would make a push in the fourth quarter, as Vibber, Field, freshman Owen Grey and sophomore Drew Clinch all converted on shots. Even so, the Eagles continued to struggle to maintain possession and Husson would go on to lose its first game of its spring trip by eight scores.
Field finished the game with five goals, bringing his season scoring total to 20, while Vibber finished with two and led the team in assists with a pair of feeds.
Eagles goaltender junior Odin Burk made eight total saves and the defense converted on 8-12 clears.
Freshman Brian Peabody and sophomore Brad Stolt put on a show at the faceoff stripe, winning 83% of the games total draws.
The Eagles will make the trip north to Frederick, Maryland, where they will face Hood College at noon on Friday.
