WELLESLEY, Mass. — The Husson University women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, taking down Wellesley College, 11-10, in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon.
Husson (1-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with the help of early goals from freshman Kate Boehmcke and junior Averi Baker. Wellesley (1-2) answered back quickly, rounding off the first quarter with four goals making it 4-2 at the end of one period.
Wellesley stayed hot in the second quarter adding a quick goal but was answered right back by Boehmcke with 11:46 left to play in the quarter. Wellesley was able to add another goal before the end of the half, expanding their lead to three.
The Eagles came out hot after the half, outscoring Wellesley 4-2 in the third, with goals from sophomore Azabell Assaf, senior Natalie Whitten and two more from Baker, rounding her afternoon off with three goals on the day and surpassing the 100-goal mark for her career.
Husson kept on rolling in the fourth quarter tying the game at 10, forcing overtime thanks to goals from senior Jordyn Lengle, Assaf, and the game-tying goal from Boehmcke.
After a scoreless first overtime, with six seconds left in the second overtime Boehmcke scored the winning goal for the Eagles on an assist from Baker.
The Eagles took advantage of the extra-man chances they got, scoring three man-up goals to Wellesley's zero.
Husson outshot Wellesley 29-27 for the game, including 25-21 in shots on goal, while Wellesley held a 17-10 edge in draw controls.
The Eagles look ahead to a non-conference matchup against Bates College on Tuesday at Boucher Field at 6 p.m.
