FARMINGTON, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team concluded its regular season with a come-from-behind victory on Saturday afternoon, as it overcame an eight-point fourth quarter deficit on the road against the University of Maine at Farmington to come away with a 71-68 win.
Husson (14-11, 11-2 NAC) jumped out to a quick start in the opening quarter, as it scored the first six points of the contest and led 20-11 after the opening 10 minutes.
Senior Maci Beals scored seven of the 20 points for the Eagles in the first quarter, as Husson held Farmington (11-13, 7-6 NAC) to just 4-16 from the floor to open the game.
The Beavers caught fire in the second quarter, as they shot just shy of 50% from the floor in the period and outscored the Eagles 20-12 to go into halftime down just 32-31.
Individually for Farmington, Jessica Dow posted 14 points in the period to lead the way, while the Eagles only had one player post multiple buckets in the frame.
The third period was a carbon-copy of the second, as once again Farmington bested Husson by a score of 20-12 in the period to take a seven-point lead into the final quarter.
Another hot individual quarter for the Beavers allowed them to take control of the game, as Melissa Mayo contributed 10 of the 20 points for Farmington in the third quarter, while freshman Alyssa Harris netted half of Husson's points in the frame.
After the Beavers took their largest lead of the game of eight points just over 90 seconds into the final period, the Eagles immediately answered with a 9-0 run to retake the lead, looking to avoid their first loss to Farmington in over 16 years.
Following a layup from freshman Alana Seward to cap off the run with 6:13 remaining, the lead would change hands six times over the next five-plus minutes, with Husson getting the last-laugh on an and-one from freshman Saige Evans, which put the Eagles up 66-65 with 1:58 remaining.
The Eagles managed to convert on 5-8 foul shots down the stretch and limit the Beavers to just three points to come away with the road win.
Evans led a balanced Husson scoring punch with 11, as eight Husson players posted six points or more in the win.
Evans also grabbed seven rebounds, while senior Sophia McVicar also scored in double-figures with 10 and senior Jordyn Lengle posted a new career-high on the glass with 17 rebounds, while also adding eight points.
The Eagles shot just shy of 40% from the floor, while outscoring the Beavers in bench points 40-15 and outrebounding them 44-36.
Husson will now turn its attention to the North Atlantic Conference tournament, which begins on Friday with the location, seeding and game times to be announced by the league this coming week.
