Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zak Mills

Walker surpasses 600-win mark in women’s basketball’s NAC win over UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Husson University head women's basketball coach Kissy Walker made more history on Saturday afternoon, as she became just the second coach in the state of Maine and the first female coach to surpass 600 career wins, as Husson defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 71-61 in North Atlantic Conference action in Presque Isle.

Husson (12-10, 9-1 NAC) doubled-up UMPI (4-14, 3-8 NAC) in the opening quarter, as it opened on an 8-0 run to force an early timeout from the Owls and ended up winning the quarter 14-7.

Freshman Saige Evans led the way for the Eagles in the opening quarter with six points, while four other Eagles found the scoring column in the frame.

Husson pushed its lead to double-figures thanks to a 24-13 second quarter in its favor to take a 38-20 lead into the locker room.

Senior Lauren Cook connected on three three-pointers in the period to pace the Eagles, who opened the quarter on another big run of 13-0 to lead by as many as 20 in the quarter.

The third quarter was another big one for Husson, as it outscored UMPI 26-13 in the frame to carry a 64-33 edge into the final period.

Cook once again caught fire from downtown in the third quarter, as she connected on three more long-distance shots to get the Eagles off to another hot start.

What seemed to be a sizeable margin for Husson headed into the final quarter, would turn into a single-digit game with under a minute left in the contest, as after a three-pointer from junior Laela Martinez made it 70-40 with just over six minutes left, the Owls went on a 21-0 run over the next five minutes to make it just a nine-point game headed into the final 60 seconds.

Thankfully for the Eagles, time was on their side, as the final minute went by with just a free throw from senior Jordyn Lengle going on the scoreboard to allow Husson to run its conference win-streak to nine games.

Cook led the way for the Eagles with a career-high 22 points on 8-12 shooting and 6-9 shooting from long-range. Cook also tied the fourth-most made three-point field goals in a single-game with six made threes.

Evans and graduate student Makaelyn Porter each posted nine points, while Evans grabbed eight rebounds.

The Owls outshot Husson from the floor, notching a 38.3% clip from the floor, compared to 37.3% for the Eagles, while Husson doubled-up UMPI in assists, 26-13.

The Eagles will play their final regular season home game of the year on Wednesday against Thomas College at 5:30 p.m.
