BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University football team battled through several momentum swings, but visiting Curry College capitalized on late opportunities to secure a 40–21 victory in Conference of New England play Saturday afternoon at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
Curry (7-1, 5-0 CNE) struck first with a 37-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to take a 3–0 lead. Husson (2-6, 1-4 CNE) responded with an impressive opening drive of its own, marching 70 yards downfield behind the running of senior Jed Lober and junior Logan Baird, but a fumble deep in Curry territory was recovered by the Colonels to halt the early scoring chance.
The Colonels extended their lead to 10–0 early in the second quarter with a short touchdown run, but Husson answered right back. Senior Max Clark and the offense pieced together a 13-play, 75-yard drive that chewed up more than seven minutes of clock. A key third-down completion to graduate student Cam Holmes kept the drive alive before sophomore Mari Montgomery pulled in a 13-yard touchdown reception from Max Clark, cutting the deficit to 10–7 with 4:27 left in the half.
Curry added another touchdown through the air before the break to make it 17–7 at halftime, but Husson's defense came up with a big stop late in the quarter — led by sophomore JT Wright, who came up with a timely fumble recovery that was forced by junior Jahmye Tyson to stall a Curry drive.
Husson came out firing to start the third quarter. After a short kickoff return set the Eagles up near midfield, Clark guided an efficient eight-play, 49-yard march capped by a one-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Caleb Solomon, trimming the lead to 17–14.
Curry answered immediately with a 71-yard touchdown run to go back up 24–14, but Husson refused to back down. On the next drive, Clark found Holmes streaking down the left sideline for a 39-yard touchdown strike, pulling the Eagles within 24–21 midway through the third.
Moments later, the Eagles' defense swung momentum again when Wright intercepted a pass that was tipped by junior Caleb Pontti deep in Curry territory. However, the ensuing drive ended with another Husson fumble inside the red zone — one of two costly turnovers that kept the Colonels ahead.
Curry stretched the lead early in the fourth with an eight-yard touchdown pass and later added a 54-yard field goal to make it 34–21.
In the closing minute, Curry tacked on a short touchdown run to seal the 40–21 final.
Clark finished 18-of-29 passing for 205 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with six different receivers. Holmes led the way with 65 yards and a score, Montgomery added four catches for 43 yards and a touchdown. Lober and Baird combined for 151 rushing yards on 29 carries to pace the ground game.
Defensively, Wright posted six tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery, while Tyson added five tackles and a forced fumble, and Crouse had one sack.
As a team, Husson totaled 394 yards of offense and forced two turnovers, while controlling possession for more than 32 minutes.
The Eagles return to action next weekend when they head to Nichols College for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
