BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University field hockey team put together a strong first quarter but ultimately fell 4–1 to No. 8 Bowdoin College on Wednesday night at the Winkin Complex.
The Polar Bears (8–2) jumped out to an early lead just over five minutes in when Emily Ferguson found the back of the cage. Husson (3–6) answered quickly, as senior Lauryn Brown scored the equalizer at the 13:38 mark off a shot that was deflected off the crossbar from junior Faith Tillotson and fell right to Brown, who knocked it into the back of the cage.
From there, Bowdoin's pressure began to take hold. The visitors reclaimed the lead midway through the second quarter when Mackay Bommer scored off an assist from Maddie Mrva, and extended their advantage with goals from Hannah Balmelli in the third and Mrva in the fourth.
Husson freshman goalkeeper Ella Duchette was busy in the cage, recording seven saves against 11 shots on goal. Defensively, Leah Pushard added a defensive save in the second quarter and contributed to a strong team effort on the back line.
The Eagles generated seven total shots and three penalty corners, highlighted by Tillotson, who tallied both a shot on goal and the assist on Brown's goal.
Husson returns to action at home on Saturday when it hosts Plymouth State University at 1 p.m.
