BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University field hockey team turned in one of its best offensive performances of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Plymouth State University 5–3 at the Winkin Complex.
Husson (4-6) wasted little time getting on the board, striking in the opening minutes when senior Maddie Perkins converted off a setup from senior Averi Baker at 3:15 of the first quarter. The Eagles doubled their lead midway through the second as Baker found the back of the cage from junior Tessa Capozzoli to make it 2–0.
Plymouth State (4-7) answered before halftime with a goal from Cassidy Leger, assisted by Katie Porrello, to cut the deficit to 2–1.
The Eagles took full control in the third quarter, scoring three times in a five-minute stretch. Baker notched her second of the game off a feed from Perkins, Capozzoli scored moments later from senior Lauryn Brown, and Perkins struck again less than a minute later to push the lead to 5–1.
The Panthers battled back in the fourth, adding goals from Porrello and Ellie Monahan, but the Eagles' early offensive surge proved too much to overcome.
Perkins and Baker each tallied two goals and one assist, while Capozzoli contributed a goal and an assist. Husson outshot Plymouth State 32–6, including a 20–6 edge in shots on goal, and held a 16–3 advantage in penalty corners.
Freshman goalkeeper Ella Duchette made two saves in the win, while senior Ella Louder was credited with a defensive save.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they head to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a midweek contest at 4:30 p.m.
