CASTINE, Maine — The Husson University men's soccer team closed its regular season with a strong 4-2 victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field, securing its seventh North Atlantic Conference win of the year.
The Eagles (7-8-4, 7-1-1 NAC) took control early and never looked back, scoring twice in quick succession midway through the first half. In the 29th minute, freshman Chadi Hamadi opened the scoring to give Husson a 1-0 lead as he followed up his own shot to give the Eagles an early edge. Just two minutes later, freshman Miguel Diaz Alvarez doubled the advantage, finishing a chance in the 31st minute after intercepting a pass just outside the 18-yard box to make it 2-0 heading into the break.
Diaz Alvarez continued his standout performance in the second half, netting his second goal of the game in the 50th minute to extend Husson's lead to 3-0. The senior midfielder has now tallied 11 goals on the season.
Maine Maritime (6-4-5, 4-2-3 NAC) cut into the lead in the 74th minute when John-John Dickenson scored off a pass from James Baur. The Eagles, however, answered late, as freshman Jakob Reichle added insurance in the 90th minute off an assist from freshman Tighe Hrabchak to make it 4-1. Dickenson scored again just seconds later for the Mariners, but Husson held firm to seal the 4-2 win.
Freshman goalkeeper Liam Mason recorded four saves in the victory, while Husson outshot Maine Maritime 14-8 and earned seven corner kicks to the hosts' two.
Diaz Alvarez led the way offensively with two goals, while Hamadi and Reichle each found the back of the net once. Hrabchak notched his first assist of the year.
The victory caps an impressive conference slate for the Eagles, who finish NAC play at 7-1-1 and carry momentum into postseason action, where they will enter as the second seed and host a semifinal game at Boucher Field on Saturday against the winner of SUNY Delhi and Lesley University with the time to be determined.
