BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University men's soccer team erupted for three second-half goals to rally past the University of Maine at Farmington, 4–3, in a North Atlantic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at John P. Boucher Field.
UMaine–Farmington (4-7-3, 3-3-2 NAC) opened the scoring early when Owen Spera found the back of the net in the ninth minute off a setup from JJ Greenlaw. Husson (6-8-3, 6-1 NAC) answered in the 18th minute when freshman Miguel Diaz Alvarez took a free kick that found its way between the legs of the Farmington goalie to knot the game up.
The Beavers reclaimed the lead just three minutes later on a Greenlaw penalty kick, sending the Eagles into halftime trailing 2–1 despite controlling possession and outshooting UMF 11–3 in the half.
The Eagles came out strong after the break. Diaz Alvarez drew a penalty in the 53rd minute and calmly converted from the spot for his second goal of the day, tying the match at 2–2. Moments later, a red card to a UMF defender gave Husson a one-player advantage, and the Eagles capitalized.
Freshman Cesar Soucre gave Husson the lead in the 61st minute with a well-placed strike, and just five minutes later, freshman Jorge Mora extended the margin to 4–2 off a feed from senior Nico Puerta.
UMaine–Farmington made it 4–3 in the 80th minute when Garrett Gendreau converted a penalty, but the Eagles' defense held firm over the final ten minutes to secure the win. Freshman Liam Mason made five saves in goal for Husson, including several key stops in the second half to preserve the lead.
Diaz Alvarez led the Eagles' attack with two goals on eight shots, while Soucre and Mora each added one. Husson outshot UMF 22–10 and earned nine corner kicks to the Beavers' none.
The victory improves Husson to 6–1 in NAC play, keeping the Eagles near the top of the conference standings heading into the final week of regular-season play where they will battle Thomas College on Wednesday and Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday.
