BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University women's soccer team earned its ninth win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, taking down Plymouth State University 2–1 at John P. Boucher Field.
The Eagles (9-4-1) struck first in the 26th minute when senior goalkeeper Madison Weigler converted a penalty kick to give Husson a 1–0 lead. It was the first goal of her collegiate career and provided an early spark for the home side, which controlled much of the opening half with seven shots and three corners.
Husson doubled its lead early in the second half when junior Emma Nicholson found the back of the net just 34 seconds after the restart. Nicholson, who played a strong two-way match anchoring the back line, buried her opportunity for her second goal of the season and what would stand as the eventual game-winner.
Plymouth State (6-8) battled back late, cutting the deficit to 2–1 in the 84th minute on a goal from Maggie MacDonald off an assist by Islah Godo. The Panthers continued to press in the closing minutes, earning multiple corner kicks, but the Eagles' defense held firm to close out the victory.
Weigler finished the afternoon with one save while leading the defensive effort, and the Eagles limited the Panthers to just two shots on goal across 90 minutes. Husson tallied 16 total shots, including 10 on target, while earning a 5–4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Eagles return to conference play this weekend as they host the University of Maine at Farmington on Homecoming on Saturday at 11 a.m.
