When Greg Martin’s phone lit up with a call from former Husson University men’s golf coach and Husson Sports Hall of Fame member, Bruce MacGregor, he assumed it was a quick check-in between old friends. The two had stayed close since Martin’s playing days, and McGregor had even attended Martin’s wedding the previous spring.

“I thought he was just calling to catch up,” Martin said. “Then he told me I was being inducted into the Hall of Fame — and it was just surreal. To get that call from him, someone who means so much to me and my career, it was really special.”

For Martin, a 2018 Husson graduate and one of the most decorated golfers in program history, the moment was both humbling and affirming. “It took a little longer than I expected,” he said with a laugh. “But it’s such an honor. I’m very proud to represent Husson in this way.”

Martin’s time at Husson was marked by consistency, competitiveness, and championships. During his four seasons with the Eagles from 2012 to 2015, he was a four-time North Atlantic Conference (NAC) All-Conference selection — earning first-team honors in 2013, 2015, and 2016 and second-team in 2014.

He helped lead Husson to three NAC championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, cementing the Eagles as one of the region’s most dominant programs. Individually, Martin was twice named NAC Player of the Year (2015 and 2016), a feat achieved by only a handful of golfers in program history.

His career totals speak volumes: seven individual wins, 21 top-five finishes, and 27 top-10 performances across 74 collegiate rounds. He posted a 76.49 career scoring average — eighth-best all-time at the time of his induction — and was a 2016 Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-American.

Martin’s list of accolades also includes GCAA All-New England honors, NEIGA All-New England selections, and multiple All-State recognitions. But what he remembers most isn’t the statistics — it’s the camaraderie and competition that came with being part of something bigger.

“Being on the Husson golf team meant you had to earn it,” Martin said. “We were successful, but that didn’t come easy. You weren’t handed a spot — you had to work for it. Coach MacGregor and Coach Dugas instilled that in us from day one. It was about pride, accountability, and putting in the time.”

Martin’s memories of his time at Husson are filled with moments of pressure, perseverance, and joy — none more vivid than a championship finish his senior year.

“We were in Vermont, it was the final day of NACs, and I asked Coach Dugas how we stood,” he recalled. “He just said, ‘You’ve got to hit the green.’ I was nervous as hell. I pulled it left, got up by the green, and he told me, ‘You’ve got to get this up and down.’ I asked him how important the putt was, and he said, ‘Don’t worry about it, man — just two-putt.’”

That reassurance calmed him, and the team went on to win the title. “That was a special one,” Martin said. “It wasn’t just about golf — it was emotional. I think coach knew it might be one of his last championships, and to share that moment with him and the guys meant everything.”

Martin also remembers his freshman-year championship at Samoset Resort — one that taught him the weight of Husson’s winning tradition. “You could feel the pressure,” he said. “We’d been so successful, and it always came down to NACs. There was this unspoken expectation that we had to win. When you’re walking down 14 and Coach won’t even tell you how the team’s doing, you know you’ve got to finish strong.”

Those experiences, Martin said, shaped not only his game but also his mindset. “Golf teaches you discipline, patience, and humility,” he said. “At Husson, I learned to work harder than I thought I could. And that’s carried me through life.”

After graduating, Martin turned that discipline and love for golf into a profession. He began working seasonally in the golf industry — spending summers in Maine and winters in New York and Florida — until a chance connection led him to a legendary opportunity.

“I got lucky my sixth year working seasonally,” he said. “I got hooked up with Jack Nicklaus at his club in Jupiter, Florida.”

That connection opened doors to some of the most elite environments in the sport. “I started starting surrounding myself with great members and players like Dustin Johnson and Rory Mcilroy,” he said. “It’s been amazing. I’m very blessed.”

Today, Martin serves as a golf professional at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida — one of the game’s most exclusive venues, where players like Tiger Woods, Xander Schauffele, and Rickie Fowler are members. “It’s pretty cool,” he said. “I get to hang out with some of the best players in the world and learn from them every day.”

He also still plays competitively. “I work full-time at a club, but I still play in tournaments,” he said. “Golf is life for me — it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I turned what I did in college into a career, and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for.”

Martin credits Husson for setting him on that path. “Husson was really the fostering ground for me,” he said. “It’s where I found my direction. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do in the golf industry, but I knew I wanted to be in it — and Husson gave me that start.”

He also cherishes the tight-knit atmosphere that defined his time on campus. “It’s such a small, close community,” he said. “You get to know everyone. I didn’t realize how good I had it until I saw bigger schools. My wife went to TCU — a huge school — and visiting there made me realize how much I appreciated that small-college feel.”

That sense of connection, he added, continues to influence him today. “In golf, personality and relationships matter,” he said. “Being from a place like Husson, where everyone knows everyone and you learn to be genuine, that really shaped me.”

As Martin looks back, his gratitude runs deep — for his coaches, teammates, and family. “Coach Dugas taught me so much about the game,” he said. “He showed me things about my swing I didn’t even know I could do. And MacGregor — he just bleeds Husson. The pride he has for the program is unreal. Seeing him get emotional about a win made me emotional too. That kind of passion stays with you.”

He also credits his father, who first introduced him to the sport. “It was just me, my brother, and my dad growing up,” Martin said. “He turned pro when he was 18 and taught me everything I know. Without him, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.”

As Martin prepares to join Husson’s Hall of Fame, he does so with appreciation for what the honor represents — not just for him, but for the program that helped him build a life around the sport he loves.
