BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's volleyball team concluded its weekend with a second-consecutive five-set win over SUNY Delhi to stay unbeaten in North Atlantic Conference play.
Delhi (3-18, 2-2 NAC) took an early one-set advantage after cruising to a 25-16 win in the opening set. Husson (5-12, 4-0 NAC) brought the set to within 11-10, but six-consecutive points from the Broncos gave them a comfortable lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
It looked as if Delhi was going to take a quick two-set lead, as it held a 23-18 advantage following a service error from the Eagles, but a 6-0 run from Husson gave it a set-point and a chance to knot the match up. The two teams traded points and with the score at 26-25 in favor of the Broncos, a service error from Delhi, followed by a kill from sophomore Mikayla Gray and a service ace from sophomore Amanda Mei Morse gave Husson the win.
The Eagles took control of set three and never looked back, as with the score at 11-9 in favor of Husson, the Eagles rattled off 10 of the next 12 points to take firm control, as back-to-back kills from graduate student Julia Leavitt and an attack error from the Broncos sealed the set victory.
With their backs against the wall, the Broncos forced a winner-take-all fifth set with a 25-17 win in set four, as they outscored the Eagles 14-6 after the score was tied at 11 midway through the frame.
Delhi got off to a hot start in the decisive fifth set by taking a quick 7-3 lead, in addition to holding a 10-7 advantage in the frame. Unfortunately for the Broncos it would be all Eagles after that, as Husson scored the final eight points of the set to pick up the conference victory, as two kills apiece from Gray and freshman Kate McPhee helped the Eagles take the final set.
Leavitt paced Husson on offense with 14 kills, while also adding seven digs, in addition to junior Janna Preskorn, who tallied a triple-double with 11 kills, 13 assists and 15 digs.
Gray tied for the team lead with 15 digs, in addition to six kills, while Mei Morse recorded 11 digs and a team-high five service aces.
The Eagles return to the court on Tuesday when they host the University of Southern Maine at 6:30 p.m. in their Dig Pink Game.
