DELHI, N.Y. – The Husson University men's soccer team suffered its first defeat in North Atlantic Conference play on Sunday afternoon, as it was beaten by SUNY Delhi with a final score of 2-0 in Delhi, New York.
Both Husson (5-8-3, 5-1 NAC) and Delhi (5-3-5, 3-1-2 NAC) had quality chances in the opening part of Sunday's contest, as freshman Cesar Soucre had a shot saved by the Delhi keeper and freshman Liam Mason turned away a chance for the Broncos to keep the game scoreless 19 minutes into the contest.
Delhi broke through in the 21st minute to take a lead, as the Eagles searched for an equalizer.
Freshman Miguel Diaz Alvarez had three great chances on net during the remainder of the opening half, as two of them were saved by the goalkeeper and the other came on a free kick which hit off the crossbar, as the game remained 1-0 in favor of Delhi at the halftime break.
Husson continued its quest for a leveling goal to begin the second half, as freshman Rique Mendes, junior Beckett Parkin and Diaz Alvarez all had chances turned away as the game entered the 79th minute.
The Broncos found a crucial insurance goal in the 79th minute, as a long goal kick with the wind at the goalie's back allowed the ball to bounce over the head of Husson's back line, which gave Delhi a one-on-one opportunity with Mason to take a two-goal lead late in the game.
Husson had three more chances rejected in the final portion of the contest, as Delhi put the finishing touches on a shutout victory.
The Eagles held a 15-8 edge in shots for the game, including 10-4 in shots on goal, while the Broncos secured a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Mason recorded two saves in net for Husson, as he suffered his fourth defeat of the year.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Maine at Farmington at 1:30 p.m. as a part of homecoming.
