BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team battled hard on Tuesday night at John P. Boucher Field, but a pair of first-half goals proved too much to overcome as the Eagles fell 3-0 to Bates College in non-conference action.
Bates (6-1-1) opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Luke Cunniffe found the back of the net off a feed from Chris Bianco. Just over two minutes later, the Bobcats doubled their lead as Antonio Mesa converted with assists from Cunniffe and Zach Perron. Mesa struck again late in the second half, sealing the result with his second goal of the match in the 83rd minute.
Husson's (3-6-3) defense absorbed heavy pressure throughout the night, with freshman goalkeeper Liam Mason making four saves to keep the Eagles within reach. Freshman Miguel Diaz Alvarez generated one of Husson's best scoring opportunities in the 73rd minute, forcing Bates keeper George Nassar into his lone save of the evening. The Eagles also earned three second-half corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.
The Bobcats attack outshot the Eagles 13-4, including 8-1 on goal, while also holding a commanding 16-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Eagles return to North Atlantic Conference play this weekend when they host the University of Maine at Presque Isle at Boucher Field for senior day at 2:30 p.m.
