FORT KENT, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team got over the .500 mark for the first time this season, as it earned a season-sweep of the University of Maine at Fort Kent with an 80-72 win on Friday evening on the road.
Fort Kent (7-7) looked to turn the tides after a lopsided first matchup between the two schools back in mid-December, as it jumped out to a 20-15 lead over Husson (11-10) after the first quarter.
Senior Lauren Cook and freshman Lilly Roy kept the Eagles in the game in the opening quarter with six and five points apiece, while Cece Bell paced the Bengals with eight points.
After Husson opened with the first five points of the contest, Fort Kent was able to put together a 12-3 run to gain a 12-8 lead with 3:36 remaining in the opening 10 minutes.
The two teams went blow-for-blow to end the opening period, but a three-pointer from Karolyn Baptiste sent the Bengals into the second quarter with a five-point lead.
The second quarter saw Husson put seven players in the scorebook and force eight turnovers from the Bengals to take a 38-34 into halftime.
Fort Kent maintained its five-point edge with 7:24 left in the first half, but the Eagles managed to outscore the Bengals 13-4 in the remainder of the quarter to take the lead into the locker room.
The third quarter was more of the same for Husson, as it once again held the Bengals to 14 points, while posting 25 of its own to take a 63-48 lead into the final period.
Husson opened the half on a 9-0 run to force a quick timeout from Fort Kent and got the lead up to as much as 62-40 with 2:38 remaining in the quarter, before the Bengals would creep back into the game with an 8-1 outburst to close the quarter.
The Eagles were able to survive being outscored 24-17 in the final period and hang on for the win, despite seeing their lead get down to as little as three points twice during the quarter.
After the Bengals got the game to 72-69 with exactly two minutes left in the contest, Husson was able to close with an 8-3 run to put the game away.
Freshman Saige Evans led five Eagles who scored in double-figures, as she posted 16 points and tied her career-high of 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season on an efficient 7-11 shooting.
Cook connected on five three-pointers for 15 points, while Roy and graduate student Trinity Montigny each posted 11 and senior Sophia McVicar added 10.
Turnovers played a key part in the win for Husson, as it turned 24 Fort Kent giveaways into 26 points, in addition to holding a 42-29 edge on the glass for the game.
The Eagles will look to wrap up the weekend with a victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle tomorrow afternoon in North Atlantic Conference play at 1 p.m. With a win, head women's basketball coach Kissy Walker will reach 600 wins for her career.
