BANGOR, Maine – A dramatic second-half, 12-point comeback propelled the Husson University Women's Basketball team to a 75-70 victory over SUNY Cobleskill at home on Saturday in North Atlantic Conference action.
Husson (8-10, 6-1 NAC) was down 55-43 with 2:27 left in the third quarter before outscoring Cobleskill (15-3, 5-1 NAC) 32-15 over the final 12 minutes. After taking the lead with four minutes left in the fourth quarter the Eagles held on for a much needed conference win.
After finding itself down 31-15 midway through the second quarter, Husson went on a 10-point run to bring the score back within six with 3:34 left in the first half. The Eagles entered the half down 36-31 to the Fighting Tigers. Husson was led offensively at the half by Sophia McVicar and Saige Evans who both scored six points.
Freshman Alana Seward came up big for the Eagles time and again in the second half with eight of her nine points and two assists coming in the fourth quarter alone. This included a full court sprint bucket saving block at the opposite end of the court, that led to a Husson basket on the ensuing possession.
The Eagles spread the scoring around with eight players scoring at least five. Led by senior's Jordyn Lengle and McVicar who finished with 12 points apiece. Additionally, Husson scored 29 points off the bench and outscored Cobleskill by 11 in the fourth quarter.
Husson scored 19 of its points at the line, going 19/23 on free throws. The Eagles only led in the game for the final four and a half minutes and shot just over 40% from the floor in the contest.
Cobleskill struggled with ball possession as they lost the turnover battle 21 to 8 with 25 of the Eagles points coming off of turnovers. The Fighting Tigers were led offensively by Cara Walker, 18 and Logan Thayne, 19. Thayne also recorded 20 rebounds to help Cobleskill out rebound the Eagles 47-33.
Next up for the Eagles is a NAC home matchup against SUNY Delhi on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Husson riding a six-game conference win streak.
