Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zak Mills

Women’s basketball has four-game win-streak snapped at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team dropped its first game since the start of the new year, as it fell to Colby College in road, non-conference play on Tuesday night by a score of 88-67 at Colby's Margaret M. Crook Center.

Husson (7-10) and Colby (7-7) battled to a dead-even first quarter, as the period ended with the score at 19-19, in a period that the Eagles were in front of for the majority of the time.

After the Mules knotted the game up at five early on, Husson took control of the contest with a 9-0 run that saw four different Eagles find the scorebook, allowing Husson to lead 14-5 midway through the period.

Colby answered right back with eight-straight points of its own and eventually took a 19-17 lead late in the period, before graduate student Trinity Montigny connected on a fast break layup to end the quarter to tie the score back up.

Much like the opening quarter, the Eagles were able to control possession of the lead for a large portion of the frame, but after a three-pointer from the Mules flipped a 40-38 deficit into a 41-40 lead, Colby would outscore 9-1 over the final 1:12, including that three-pointer, to take a 47-41 edge into the locker room.

Freshman Lilly Roy and senior Jordyn Lengle paced the way for Husson in the opening half with nine points each, while Lengle grabbed four rebounds and Roy added three assists.

The third quarter is where Colby made its mark, as with the score at 57-48 in favor of the Mules, they would score the next 12 points to take a firm 21-point lead and would outscore Husson 30-13 in the period.

The Eagles were able to get the better of the Mules in the final period by possessing a 13-11 scoring advantage, but the damage had already been done, as Colby got back to .500 on the season with a commanding win.

Lengle posted a team-high 16 points to lead Husson, in addition to shooting 8-9 from the foul line, grabbing seven rebounds and recording two steals and two blocks.

Roy finished in double-figures for a third-consecutive game, as she contributed 13, while graduate student Makaelyn Porter also recorded double-digits with 11.

As a team, the Eagles managed to shoot just over 32% from the floor, but managed to connect on 21 of their 25 free throw attempts and force Colby into 15 turnovers.

Husson will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts SUNY Cobleskill in North Atlantic Conference play.
